After a two-year hiatus in hunting activity, Hvalur hf. announced plans to go ahead with the 2026 whaling season which finished in September 2026. 93 whales were hunted in the 2026 season and that’s just the ones we know about.
In claims by the remaining three countries that take part in this abhorrently cruel past time (Norway, Iceland & Japan) that quotas are implemented for sustainable ocean management, there is no consideration for the detrimental ecological effects on marine ecosystems and the global climate as a whole.
There is some hope with the news that the Icelandic government confirming plans to introduce new whaling legislation in February 2027, putting a permanent ban on whaling. This legislation still needs to be introduced and passed. Until then, whales will continue to be needlessly killed, with the ongoing quota licence having been granted up until 2029.
It’s time to end these barbaric hunts.
Please urge the Icelandic government and Minister of Industries to act and ban whale hunting for good.
