In 2024, the government of Iceland announced it would permit Hvalur Hr. and Tjaldtangi ehf. to hunt over 400 whales (209 fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) and 217 minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata)) respectively each season until 2029.
After a two-year hiatus in hunting activity, Hvalur hf. have announced plans to go ahead with the 2026 whaling season.
This is devastating news. Whilst the quotas for the 2026 season have decreased to 150 fin whales and 168 minke whales, the impacts will still be detrimental.
In claims by the remaining three countries that take part in this abhorrently cruel past time (Norway, Iceland & Japan) that quotas are implemented for sustainable ocean management, there is no consideration for the detrimental ecological effects on marine ecosystems and the global climate as a whole.
It’s time to end these brutal hunts.
Please urge the Icelandic government to act and ban whale hunting for good.
