Around the world, four animals suffer in tests or experiments every second.
For most, we can never know what happened to them. Most animal procedures go unpublished and are not exposed to wider scientific or public scrutiny.
Animals are force-fed products, infected with disease, blinded, electrodes implanted into their brains, and more.
Unnecessary and harmful, we already know that each species responds differently to substances and results of animal tests can be affected by the animal's age, diet, bedding materials, even the laboratory environment, and have been found to vary from laboratory to laboratory. Artificially created diseases in laboratory animals as 'models' of human disease are not the same as the disease in the real world in humans, so can produce misleading results.
Yet animals continue to be used. In the UK, more than 2.6 million animals are used in procedures every year.
